However, thanks to the latest research by geneticists, it turned out that the closest wild "relative" of the watermelon grows in Sudan, and the watermelon itself most likely first appeared in the northeastern regions of the "Black Continent".

The watermelon has a long history of distribution, but it is known for sure that the ancient Egyptians knew how to grow it. The berry was so revered that it was even placed in the tomb of the Pharaoh, so that even in the afterlife, the deceased ruler could enjoy its taste. Watermelon was also depicted on the walls of tombs and was mentioned in ancient papyri, including those associated with medical recipes.

Historians also claim that the ancient Romans also consumed watermelon. They used the berry in several forms - fresh, salted, and even in the form of honey. At the same time, the Arabs described watermelon as a medicine that can cleanse the body. In the Middle East, it was believed that if you consume a watermelon before a meal, the berry "will take all diseases out of the body."

Today, China is the largest producer of watermelons. There he appeared in the 10th century under the name "Melon of the West". By the way, China also had its own Watermelon festival. It was celebrated annually in September. But the most unusual watermelons are grown in Japan. Thanks to the cultivation in the "land of the rising sun", you can buy berries in the form of a pyramid, a cube, a heart, and even miniature watermelons, up to 10 centimeters in diameter.
